Connecting classrooms with National Park Rangers through personalized video messages

Post Pigeon EDU

Our signature “Postcards” program connects classrooms with National Park Rangers across the United States via Video Postcards. Our Rangers represent a wide array of National Parks, Historic Sites, and Monuments. So, how does it work? On our platform, educators can choose from one of our participating national park sites, they receive our curriculum guides and their students come up with questions for a Ranger, we send those questions over, and a Park Ranger responds with a personalized video message answering those questions. We then add these videos to our content library.

Background

2018.

Growing up in the middle of the country, the nearest national park to me was nearly 300 miles away. Due to this I only discovered my passion for the outdoors as an adult. I had the opportunity to go on my first backpacking trip in 2018 and from then on, I was hooked.

National Parks became a huge part of my life and opened up my world.

2022.

In the fall semester of my graduate school program, at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education I came across a TikTok video created by a 6th grade Earth Sciences Teacher about writing letters to National Parks Rangers with her students. Given my love for education and National Parks, I was immensely excited to come across this project! Working in the EdTech space for many years, on projects that worked to take students on virtual adventures and connect them with the world using tech, my brain immediately began to wonder how tech could be used in this process. I set up a call with Nicole to learn more about her experience and pain points.

Around this time, I also started cold emailing National Park Rangers. My biggest questions: how had the pandemic impacted park education? If digital learning programs existed, what made them difficult to execute? Post Pigeon was born on these amazing, collaborative conversations.

TODAY.

To date, we’ve launched a successful pilot program with four National Parks and over 150 students. We’re now working on building out our high fidelity backend, expanding our National Parks partners, and reaching more students.
